The need for immediate contribution, response, and accuracy of results has led to the entry of drones and especially Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as new technological vehicles. However, the integration of such a colossal technological acquisition is by no means an easy task. Many requirements appear in various areas such as telecommunications, payload problems that the UAV must carry, and operations plans, requirements that must be met to avoid safety issues, collision avoidance, unstable connections, and so more. The purpose of this thesis is to study as best as possible and most effectively the contribution of satellite communications to achieve reliable and durable Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) operations. A three-level analysis will be presented which will concern the Design, Modeling, and Analysis of satellite communications in combination with UAV operations in a way where efficiency of the link will be maximum. After all, an experiment will take place that results and parameters used will be discussed in order to compute the efficiency of the link budget. It is important to know that cellular communications have so far played the most important and accurate role in both terrestrial and air communications. This is about to change as satellites promise features that cannot compete with terrestrial networks, resulting in the integration of UAVs with satellite communications. However, things are unclear, and the risks posed either from the point of view of personal data or from safety and health can act as an obstacle in developing and upgrading communications

Association between iron deficiency and febrile seizures

ObjectiveThe relationship between iron status and febrile seizures has been examined in various settings, mainly in the Developing World, with conflicting results. The aim of this study was to investigate any association between iron deficiency and febrile seizures (FS) in European children aged 6–60 months.DesignProspective, case–control study.SettingGreek population in Thessaloniki.Patients50 patients with febrile seizures (cases) and 50 controls (children presenting with fever, without seizures).InterventionsNone.Main outcome measuresHaematologic parameters (haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, red cell distribution width), plasma iron, total iron-binding capacity, plasma ferritin, transferrin saturation and soluble transferrin receptors were compared in cases and controls.ResultsPlasma ferritin was lower (median [range]: 42.8 (3–285.7) vs 58.3 (21.4–195.3 ng/ml; p = 0.02) and Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) higher (mean [Standard Deviation] 267 [58.9] vs 243 [58.45] ?g/dl, p = 0.04) in cases than in controls. Results were similar for 12 complex FS cases (ferritin 30 (3–121 vs 89 (41.8–141.5 ng/lL; TIBC 292.92 [68.0] vs 232.08 [36.27] ?g/dL). Iron deficiency, defined as ferritin <30 ng/ml, was more frequent in cases (24%) than controls (4%; p = 0.004). Ferritin was lower and TIBC higher in 18 with previous seizures than in 32 with a first seizure although haemoglobin and mean cell haemoglobin concentration were higher.ConclusionsEuropean children with febrile seizures have lower Ferritin than those with fever alone, and iron deficiency, but not anaemia, is associated with recurrence. Iron status screening should be considered as routine for children presenting with or at high risk for febrile seizures

Evidence for treatable inborn errors of metabolism in a cohort of 187 Greek patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

We screened for the presence of inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) in 187 children (105 males; 82 females, ages 4–14 years old) who presented with confirmed features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Twelve patients (7%) manifested increased 3-hydroxyisovaleric acid (3-OH-IVA) excretion in urine, and minor to significant improvement in autistic features was observed in seven patients following supplementation with biotin. Five diagnoses included: Lesch Nyhan syndrome (2), succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) deficiency (2), and phenylketonuria (1) (2.7%). Additional metabolic disturbances suggestive of IEMs included two patients whose increased urine 3-OH-IVA was accompanied by elevated methylcitrate and lactate in sera, and 30 patients that showed abnormal glucose-loading tests. In the latter group, 16/30 patients manifested increased sera beta hydroxybutyrate (b-OH-b) production and 18/30 had a paradoxical increase of sera lactate. Six patients with elevated b-OH-b in sera showed improved autistic features following implementation of a ketogenic diet (KD). Five patients showed decreased serum ketone body production with glucose loading. Twelve of 187 patients demonstrated non-specific MRI pathology, while 25/187 had abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG) findings. Finally, family history was positive for 22/187 patients (1st or 2nd degree relative with comparable symptomatology) and consanguinity was documented for 12/187 patients. Our data provide evidence for a new biomarker (3-OH-IVA) and novel treatment approaches in ASD patients. Concise 1 sentence take-home message: Detailed metabolic screening in a Greek cohort of ASD patients revealed biomarkers (urine 3-hydroxyisovaleric acid and serum b-OH-b) in 7% (13/187) of patients for whom biotin supplementation or institution of a KD resulted in mild to significant clinical improvement in autistic features
